Magnificent roots

Just look at those awesome roots ….. the one in the centre measuring about 4 feet in height.  I’m not sure what species it is but this is one special tree that must have been planted there a long time ago.  Its located right in front of the Panasonic building along Jln Bukit Merah.  I pass it everyday on my way to work and would marvel at its beauty and uniqueness.  What I found interesting about these roots is its huge size and flap-like shape that fans out at the base.  I’ve not seen such roots on other trees planted along the roads so far.
I’ve always wanted to take a picture of it but only did so yesterday as I was going to Ikea which was just 2 bus stops away from where it stood.  Let’s hope the National Parks will never chop it down for any reason and have it added into the Heritage Trees registry if they haven’t already done so.  I did not know they had such a registry until I checked out their website here: Heritage Trees .
Info taken from the National Parks website:
The Heritage Trees Scheme was announced in 17 Aug 2001 with the objective of promoting conservation of our mature trees to the community.  In support of this initiative, a Heritage Trees Fund has also been established by The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC), with an initial donation of $125,000. The Fund will be used to kick start a conservation programme to safeguard our Heritage Trees and to promote appreciation of our natural heritage. Some of these programme initiatives include installation of lightning conductors, interpretive signage, and putting in place a nomination scheme for the community.
They do have a nomination form for the public to send in but judging from their description of ‘The criteria for endorsement of a Heritage tree include a girth size of 5m, rarity of species, aesthetic, historical significance, cultural reason, social and educational value’ this tree might not meet their terms.  I did not think of measuring it but it probably doesn’t have a 5m girth ….. I’m not exactly sure how large that is though.  I really like this tree so I’m going to send in my nomination anyway and from this moment on, it shall be my special tree.
